Hyères - a town steeped in history

Hyères is brimming with history. Take advantage of your stay at the Giens peninsula complex in Hyères, to visit the town and its gems.

It all begins at the Olbia archeological site, a former Greco-Roman town. Journey back through the centuries as part of this guided tour; Hyères was once a large Mediterranean trading port; discover the remains of old homes, shops, thermal spas and sanctuaries.

In feudal times, the town centre was moved to higher ground, overlooking the sea. The old castle bears witness to this medieval past. From Massillon gate, wander through the pedestrian streets of the old city as far as the castle, which affords unobstructed views over the coast and the îles d’Or islands.

During the 20th century, Hyères became a prestigious beach resort, renowned for its mild winters, beaches and palm trees. As you stroll along, observe the façades of bygone hotels, which were once an important part of the town’s fame.

During your visit to the town centre, don’t miss a tour of the brand new Hyères Museum, which immerses visitors in Hyères scenery and southern French culture.
